ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2010 PDF Print

During 2010, Friends of Fogg Dam Inc. (FOFD) have:

·   requested causeway potholes to be repaired after the wet season, which was actioned.

·   identified areas of the Woodland to Water Lily boardwalk needing repair that was actioned upon.

·   with an EnvironmeNT Grant plus community support, held a successful Field Day on 11 April.  There were activities for the whole family with talks about the area, conservation issues, art and photography, walks with experts to discover birds, butterflies, plants and bush tucker plus exciting children’s activities.  Traditional Owners welcomed visitors and the new Monsoon Forest Boardwalk was officially opened by the Hon. Karl Hampton, MLA.  Over 650 people attended and feedback was very positive.

·   held a Field Day debriefing and evaluation meeting with BBQ in May.

·   had a presentation by Alice Leppitt on her Charles Darwin University Honours project studying the aquatic vegetation at Fogg Dam at Fogg Dam on 20 June.

·   with an EnvironmeNT Heritage Grant, completed a history of the Humpty Doo Rice Project which is posted on the FOFD website.  Information to allow people to follow a Humpty Doo Rice Trail was also prepared for implementing into practice when funding becomes available.

  ·   held a stall at the Garden Spectacular/Sustainable Living Expo at George Brown Botanical Gardens on 5,6 June.

  ·   had a presence at the Student Sustainability Summit NT at Milner Primary School on 7 June.

·   prepared and submitted to NT Parks & Wildlife in July a Wetlands proposal to create open water on the floodplain below the Fogg Dam causeway.

·   Received an update in October by Dr Michael Crossland on the research work with cane toads being undertaken by Sydney University Tropical Ecology Research Centre based at Middle Point. 

·   been advised that the NT Government has identified funding to remove weeds and create more open water at Fogg Dam by restoring a drainage system under the causeway and dredging areas beside the causeway and at the end of the Woodlands to Water Lily Walk.  It is anticipated that some of the work for the FOFD wetlands proposal can be done at the same time.

·   identified the need for BBQ facilities at Fogg Dam and a toilet on the western side of the causeway and submitted a request for these to Parks & Wildlife. 

o    met with Dr Stephen Ward from the Biodiversity Branch of Parks & Wildlife to plan bird monitoring and control sites at Fogg Dam in conjunction with the project to create more open water.  Fogg Dam P&W are to mark the areas before the monitoring can begin.

·   held working bees to weed the Monsoon Forest Walk at Fogg Dam were held in February, March, April and November.

·   with Parks & Wildlife Fogg Dam, offered a $4,700.00 grant from the NT Natural Resource Management Board, Caring for Country Community Grant to control and eradicate Olive Hymenachne within the Fogg Dam catchment area.

·   prepared a Business Plan for 2011.
