ACHIEVEMENTS TO JANUARY 2009
Friends of Fogg Dam Inc. (FOFD) commenced with a launch to determine interest on 15 October 2006.   

Since then we have:

  • Established a good working relationship with the Traditional Owners, the Local MLA and Landcare
  • Developed a vision statement, purpose and objectives
  • Developed a logo, thanks to Niven McCrie
  • Developed a website – thanks to Peter Walker of Imagineer, Print, Web & Multi Media Design
  • Developed a 5 year business plan which is renewed annually
  • Had a sign installed at the entrance of Fogg Dam welcoming visitors and informing them of Friends of Fogg Dam – thanks to Parks & Wildlife
  • Assisted Parks & Wildlife by handing out questionnaires to Fogg Dam visitors over a weekend
  • 49 financial members plus additional people who have asked to be included on the FOFD mailing list
  • Met with Parks & Wildlife concerning revision of the Fogg Dam Management Plan
  • Submitted a formal paper to the review of NT Parks & Wildlife Management Plan of Adelaide River Parks.
  • Established a link with Sydney University Tropical Ecology Research Facility based at Middle Point and have six monthly updates on local research activities
  • Obtained and/or developed bird, frog, mammal, butterfly, plant reptile and amphibian lists for Fogg Dam
  • Identified people who were actively involved in the Humpty Doo Rice Project
  • Been responsible for the installation of water for hand washing at the public toilets
  • Held working bees to:
  • Help remove the damaged Monsoon Forest boardwalk
  • Remove snake weed in the monsoon forest walk area
  • Replace wooden slats on the Woodlands to Water Lily Boardwalk
  • Apply wood preservative onto the Woodlands to Water Lily Boardwalk
  • Written to support Parks and Wildlife submission for funding to replace the boardwalk
  • Participated in World Environment Day with a Fogg Dam stand in 2007 and 2008
  • Collaborated with Middle Point School and provided them with a Wollemi Pine from the Landcare project, fitting into their school curriculum
  • Rigously lobbied the NT Government (letters, hosting Ministers at Fogg Dam and presenting them with a Fogg Dam portfolio, petition, letter to the editor of local Newspaper, talkback on ABC radio) to rebuild the Monsoon Forest Boardwalk.
  • Obtained commitment from NT Government to rebuild the Monsoon Forest Boardwalk in late 2008 – construction anticipated to be complete in December at a cost of $1.25M.
  • Organised for a talk by Mr Ted Kilpatrick, one of the original rice farmers, about the history of the Humpty Doo Rice Project
  • Made Mr Ted Kilpatrick an Honorary Life Member
  • Organised a talk from Barry Scott, Chief District Ranger, about fire management
  • Organised a birding guide for Fogg Dam, thanks to Mr Niven McCrie
  • Responded to the draft Magpie Goose Management Plan
  • Obtained generous donations to support the Fogg Dam Field Day in 2008.
  • Held a Field Day at Fogg Dam on 21 September 2008 attended by over 400 people, including the NT Minister for the Environment. Visitors were welcomed to country by the Traditional Owners. The day program was packed with a variety of activities: bird, butterfly, plant walks; talks about research happening at Fogg Dam by three different universities; workshops on drawing and photographing wildlife; and lots of children’s activities. A number of requests to make the Field Day an annual event were received.
  • Obtained an Australia Post/Landcare grant for $3,000.00 to purchase equipment for working bees and put signage about Fogg Dam on Anzac Parade.
  • Obtained a grant of $3,000.00 from Telstra Shop Darwin & Winnellie to purchase a container / shed in which to keep equipment in.

CURRENT PROJECTS

We are:

  • Working on a sign about Fogg Dam to be located on Anzac Parade
  • Working on interpretive signage for the Monsoon Forest Boardwalk to make it a ‘path of pilgrimage.’
  • Further working bees for weed control
  • Installing a container in which to store FOFD equipment
  • Commencing plans for a Field Day in early 2010

    Parks & Wildlife Team at Fogg Dam, led by Barry Scott, Chief District Ranger and Mark Fogarty have provided assistance and allowed us to use their facilities for meetings and working bees.

    Mr Peter Foster of Landcare for ongoing encouragement, support and assistance.
    Mr Niven McCrie designed our logo and prepared the Fogg Dam Birding Guide.
  • Ms Kezia Purick, MLA, for allowing FOFD to use her Community Meeting Room.
  • Mr Ted Warren, past MLA, is a member and has provided assistance and support from the beginning.
  • Australia Post / Landcare for a grant of $3,000.00 in September 2008 to purchase equipment of develop signage on Anzac Parade.
  • Telstra Shop Darwin & Winnellie for a grant of $3,000.00 in December 2008 to purchase a container/shed in which to store equipment.
