LAUNCH OF INTERPRETIVE SHELTER PDF Print
On Thursday 23rd July approximately 60 people attended the official opening of an Interpretive Shelter about Fogg Dam outside Middle Point Village by the Hon. Alison Anderson MLA, the then NT Minister for Parks and Wildlife and Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage.   Local member and Deputy Opposition Leader, Kezia Purick, and member for Nelson, Gerry Wood also attended.

Development of the Interpretive Shelter was made possible by a grant from Landcare/Australia Post to Friends of Fogg Dam Inc.  The official launch of the shelter was undertaken by Friends of Fogg Dam with the Traditional owners, the Limilngan-Wulna people and Middle Point Primary School.

Art work of the signage was undertaken by local artist Jane Moore who lived in Kakadu for many years and has a long connection with Fogg Dam.  The stunning front panel facing the road (Anzac Parade) shows Fogg Dam as a wildlife sanctuary and heritage site.  Fogg Dam was declared a heritage site earlier this year.  One large panel illustrates examples of wildlife finding sanctuary: in the water; on the floodplains; and in the paperbark and monsoon forests.  The second large panel shows a history of ‘Living with this land.’  It has information about Indigenous land use, the Humpty Doo Rice Project and the threats and opportunities of today.  Actual photos from the Humpty Doo Rice Project are shown.  These were provided by Mr Ted Kilpatrick, one of the original rice farmers who lives in Darwin. A map of the area shows nearby tourist attractions.

After the official opening attendees were treated to an informative power point presentation on the history of Fogg Dam by students of Middle Point Primary School.  This was followed by a corroboree by the Limilngan-Wulna people from Humpty Doo Station before morning tea at the school.

Friends of Fogg Dam Inc. was awarded an Landcare/Australia Post grant to develop the signage and purchase safety equipment and tools to help with maintenance of Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve.

A grant from the Telstra Shop Darwin City and Telstra Business Centre NT, enabled Friends of Fogg Dam Inc. to purchase a container to store their equipment adjacent to the Interpretive Shelter at Middle Point village.
